The following buses serve Colchester town centre, Colchester train station and the University of Essex:
61, 62, 74/74B, 76, 78
Combined frequency: every 10 minutes weekdays during the day, 3-4 per hour weekday evenings. Weekends less frequent.

Colchester train stations

Colchester has two train stations: “Colchester” and “Colchester Town”. “Colchester Town” station is closer to firstsite, but has less frequent trains.

The last trains from London Liverpool Street to Colchester are currently as follows: 00.46 (Monday-Friday), 00.18 (Saturday), 00.02 (Sunday).

Colchester station

  • “Colchester” station (also known as “Colchester North”) is the mainline station for the town, with regular trains to and from London, Ipswich, Norwich, Harwich, and other stations in East Anglia.
  • Colchester station is located about two miles from Firstsite.
  • On Monday to Saturday, during the day, there are two trains per hour from Colchester to Colchester Town.
  • Buses and Taxis to the town centre and the University of Essex campus depart from the station forecourt.

Colchester Town station

Stansted Airport to Colchester


There are two regular coach/bus services between Stansted and Colchester.

The National Express 250 departs every two hours, usually about 20 minutes past the hour, with a travel time of about one hour. It arrives at Colchester Bus Station, Osborne street, a short walk from firstsite (

The SX Connect 133 departs every hour. It serves the Colchester North Station, the High Street, and Bus Station, and the University of Essex. Journey times take between 90 and 110 minutes depending on destination (


It is also possible to take the Stansted Express train to London Liverpool Street (about 45 minutes duration), and then take another train to Colchester (about 50 minutes duration).

Heathrow Airport to Colchester

There are two main options for travel from Heathrow to central London for connecting trains on to Colchester: (1) Heathrow Express, (2) London Underground.

The Heathrow Express train takes just 15 minutes to Paddington but it is commensurately expensive: £20 for a single ticket or £34 for a return ticket, and you still need to take the Underground from Paddington to Liverpool Street.

1) Heathrow Express option

  • Take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington.
  • At Paddington, take the London Underground to Liverpool Street (the Hammersmith and City Line or the Circle Line).
  • Take a train from London Liverpool Street to Colchester.

2) London Underground option

  • Take the London Underground (Piccadilly Line) from Heathrow to Holborn.
  • Change at Holborn on to the Central Line. Take the Central Line to Liverpool Street.
  • Take a train from London Liverpool Street to Colchester.
